Here we are in the new year. Its only fitting that we start the year with something new in the golf bag. Club manufacturers continue to push the limits on technology‚ and there are real benefits for golfers. So which club merits your consideration over the others‚ it's not the driver.
There is one club in your bag that you will use more than any other club. In fact the club I am thinking about not only accounts for more strokes than any other club, it accounts for almost as many strokes as all the other clubs combined. By now you know I am referring to the putter.
Here is how you know if you would benefit from the new technology. From your favorite pro shop or golf store, buy some impact tape. If you are not familiar with this, it is a tape that your adhere to the face of a club. When a ball impacts the tape, an imprint of the ball is left on the tape making a record of where the contact was made. Once the tape is applied use the alignment mark on the putter face to draw a vertical line that bisects the putter face. Make ten ten-foot putts. Then apply a new piece of tape, draw the vertical line and make ten twenty-foot putts. The alignment mark on the top of your putter indicates the position at which impact will not cause the club head to twist (the sweet spot). The vertical line you drew, allows you to see how often you impact the putter on this spot. When you don't the putter will twist and the ball does not roll on your target line. If more than six out of the ten putts impacted the putter other than on the vertical line, the majority of your putts are off-line.
And this is where you can have a better game. Manufacturers are now making putters with a very high M.O.I. (moment of inertia). These putters twist very little when struck off-center. Find two or three putters that look good and have a high M.O.I. Then decide which one you align the best and which one you have the best distance control with.
When you have narrowed it down, then find a professional who tells you they are capable of fitting the putter (sizing the length of the shaft) perfectly for you. Enjoy your new putter. Enjoy making more putts.
