SIUE Golfers among athletics honored by OVC

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville finished third in its first year of eligibility for the 2008-2009 Ohio Valley Conference Institutional Academic Achievement Award.

The award is presented annually to the institution with the greatest percentage of its student-athletes named to the OVC’s Honor Roll for that academic year. Austin Peay State University edged out Morehead State University for top honors. OVC officials said SIUE was within two percentage points of first place out of the 11 member schools.

The SIUE softball program won the OVC Team Academic Achievement Award, garnering the highest percentage of softball players who were named to the OVC’s Honor Roll.

Eight SIUE student-athletes received the OVC Medal of Honor award and 85 were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The OVC Medal of Honor is given annually to the student-athlete(s) who achieve the highest grade point average (GPA) in an OVC-sponsored sport. A student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 GPA and be eligible and on the team throughout the competitive season.

OVC Medal of Honors winners posted a perfect 4.00 this past year. SIUE’s honorees include Ryan Wiggs (Belleville) from baseball, Kyle Cameron (East Moline) in men’s cross country/men’s track and field, Kelly Flounders (Homer Glen) in women’s cross country/track & field, Kirstin Fischer (Godfrey) in women’s golf, Kaci Backs (Greenville) in women’s soccer, Devan Faulkenberg (Troy) in men’s tennis, Kelsey Hubert (Freeburg) in volleyball, and Samantha Schulte (Kenosha, Wis.) in volleyball.
